 Culture and History |

| Around the period from 6th century to 13th century, the culture, based on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, was being flourished. The name of the culture is "Okhotsk Culture." It has been thought that the pioneers had moved to the south from Sakhalin in Russia. They began to live in the north part and their culture was gradually flourished toward the east and further north. Although their culture was extinct already, it has been believed that Ainu culture adopted the culture of Okhotsk. Abashiri that the drift ice comes to every winter has been said to be the original place as the culture of Okhotsk. You may be able to know the way of life at that time by the remains in Moyoro Shell Heap.

| Hokkaido North Race Museum The Hokkaido North Race Museum is a world-interesting folk museum because the North races coming from Greenland and Scandinavia are the subjects of the museum. About 900 exhibits of the daily goods, collected from the United States, Canada, Russia, Chinese, North Europe, and many regions in Japan, are displayed. Those exhibits are also categorized into each theme, such as, food, clothing, shelter, mental culture, and profession.
